Assistant Director of Graduate Support

Alexander Adames is the Assistant Director of Graduate Support at Nativity Prep. Prior to this role, he served as a teaching fellow for one year, teaching 6th grade social studies and 8th grade writing. In addition to being the high school placement coordinator in charge of matriculating rising 8th graders into high school, Alex serves as a basketball coach and a baseball coach for the middle school varsity teams. Alex received his undergraduate degree from Quinnipiac University, where he majored in Political Science with a concentration in Racial Politics. He is currently working towards a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Boston College. Alex is a proud Nativity graduate from the 2009 class of Marquette.

Mel Bissell

Teacher, Test Prep (7th & 8th Grade)

Mel Bissell teaches Test Prep to the 7th and 8th grade. She worked at Nativity previously in roles including High School Placement Director and Social Studies Coordinator. Her former experience includes teaching in public middle and high schools in Medfield MA and Highland Park, IL, as well as in Japan. She graduated from Williams College (BA) and Harvard Graduate School of Education (EdM). She loves to travel and spend time with her family, especially her husband and three sons (all former Nativity volunteers.)

 

Tim Carey Graduate Support Volunteer

Tim Carey

Graduate Support Volunteer

Tim Carey is a regular volunteer with the Graduate Support Program, working with students in the high school application process, editing essays, taking students to interviews and occasionally visiting graduates at their respective high schools. He is also a regular photography for the school’s many events, sports programs and activities. Tim taught for three years at an independent school in California; for six years at Middlebury College as an admissions officer, associate dean of students, coach and instructor in English; for two years at Roxbury Latin School as English Department Head; and for thirty-eight years at Noble and Greenough as a teacher, coach, English Department Head, Middle School Head and Dean of Faculty. He received his BA from Middlebury College in 1965 and Ma in English, also from Middlebury, in 1974. Photography, especially sports photography, has become a passion of his since Tim retired in 2014.

Teaching Fellow, Writing Teacher (6th & 8th Grade)

Abigail Clavin is the 6th and 8th grade Writing teacher at Nativity Prep and a current Teaching Fellow. As a Teaching Fellow, she serves as coordinator of the PULSE tutors program at Boston College and coaches various sports and afternoon activities. Prior to Nativity Prep, Abigail worked on a sustainable housing project and in marketing & PR. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston College, and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education at Boston College. Abigail enjoys being active and spending time in the outdoors and on the water.

Reading and Language Arts Teacher (6th & 8th Grade)

Kevin Coughlin teaches sixth and eighth grade reading and language arts. Additionally, he is an assistant coach with the baseball team in the spring. Kevin earned his M.Ed through the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame while teaching at Archbishop Carroll in Washington, DC. After that, he taught at Bishop McNamara High School, just outside of DC. In the summers, Kevin umpires baseball around the city.

Religion Teacher (6th, 7th & 8th Grade)

Ed Dailey leads Religion Study program for the 6th through 8th grades at Nativity Prep. He also assists with campus ministry and leads the school’s monthly Mass celebrations. Outside Nativity Prep, he practices law with a Boston law firm. Ed is a U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of Dartmouth College. He completed law studies at Boston University and theology studies at Boston College. Ed is a racing sailor, avid gardener and minimally competent skier.

School Counselor

Colleen Evans is a School Counselor at Nativity Prep. She provides individual and small group counseling for our students and also teaches Social Emotional Learning Class. Prior to Nativity Prep, Colleen worked providing counseling and crisis intervention services at Wayside Youth and Family Support Network. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston College and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the Boston College. In her spare time, Colleen loves to play and watch sports and read books.

Director of Graduate Support

Nora Frias is the Director of Graduate Support at Nativity Prep. Nora oversees the Graduate Support program serving all Nativity graduates in their journey through high school, college, career and beyond. Prior to Nativity, Nora has worked for several college access organizations including KIPP Through College and The Posse Foundation. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Boston College in Psychology and Higher Education Administration. Nora was born in Durango, Mexico, grew up in El Paso, Texas and now tentatively calls Boston “home”.

Teaching Fellow, Social Studies and Religion Teacher (4th & 5th Grade)

Mackenzie Horl is a second-year Teaching Fellow covering 4th grade Social Studies and Religion at Nativity Prep. In addition to teaching, she coaches JV Basketball and Track, is a member of the Campus Ministry Committee, and the proctor for the Trivia and Sports & History Clubs. She received her undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross and is currently pursuing her Masters in Secondary Education from Boston College. In her free time, Mackenzie loves to go for runs around Jamaica Plain and play golf.

Lead Teacher (4th Grade)

Kerry Knott is the lead 4th grade teacher at Nativity Prep. She is responsible for teaching fourth grade reading, writing, language arts and math. In addition to teaching her content areas, her role includes facilitating the transition of Nativity’s newest students by working closely with parents and through her role on the Student Support Team.  Her dedication to the fourth grade begins before her students are even enrolled through her involvement on the Admissions Committee. During the school year and in the summer program Miss Knott works closely with her Grade 4/5 Cohort to best support the students and prepare them for the rest of their Nativity journey. Outside of her academic responsibilities Miss Knott can be seen coaching JV Basketball in the winter, a true passion of hers. Prior to coming to Nativity, Miss Knott graduated from Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. with a B.A. in History and a minor in Secondary Education.  Her Franciscan education at Siena and passion for urban education encouraged her to pursue service after graduation. This led her home to Boston where she found Nativity just a mile and half from her childhood home. Before accepting her position as lead teacher, Miss Knott spent two years as the fourth grade teaching fellow at Nativity. During her time as a fellow Miss Knott completed her M.A.Ed from Boston College in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Special Education. Outside of work Miss Knott enjoys spending time outdoors hiking in N.H. and playing with her dog, who has become a fan favorite here at Nativity.

Kyle joined the Nativity Prep community as its Principal in 2018. He began his career as a teacher with the REACH Program at his alma mater, Regis High School, and over the years also served REACH as an Academic Dean and Summer Coordinator. Just prior to joining Nativity, he was Dean of Students and taught English at Regis. A longtime student of Jesuit education as well, Kyle received his undergraduate degree from Le Moyne College, his Master’s from Boston College, and is currently studying with the Hurtado Cohort of the Seminars in Ignatian Leadership. As principal, he collaborates closely with the Nativity Prep faculty to build a curriculum and program deeply rooted in the Ignatian principle of cura personalis, or “care for the entire person.” Outside the classroom, Kyle enjoys playing hockey, cooking, and spending time with his family.

Mike Murphy is the Lead 5th Grade Teacher at Nativity Prep. As lead teacher, Mike supervises the academic work of the 5th grade class. Along with this responsibilities, Mike serves as the track coach and is the moderator of the Library Club. Before joining Nativity Prep, Mike was a part of the Alliance for Catholic Education Teaching Fellows program. Through this program, Mike taught 4th grade in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from The Catholic University of America, Mike went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Notre Dame. Mike is a voracious read and shares his love of literature with his students in the classroom, and through the his moderation of the Library Club.

Sara Noone School Counselor

School Counselor

Sara Noone is a School Counselor, working with all grade levels at Nativity Prep. Ms. Noone also teaches a weekly Social Emotional Learning class to the 4th grade class. Prior to joining Nativity Prep, she worked in a variety of programs & populations, including doing community mental health work with children and families, providing outpatient therapy, managing a transitional housing program for women healing from domestic violence, and as a case manager for homeless families. She received her undergraduate degree from Marist College and Master’s Degree in Social Work from Boston College. Ms. Noone is also a Former Jesuit Volunteer ‘99-‘00 (Casa Dorothy Day, Oakland, CA).

Robert Petrie is the Lead Teacher for 6th Grade Social Studies and a Teaching Fellow at Nativity Prep. In addition to overseeing the academic work for Social Studies for the 6th grade class, he is interested in coaching a number of different sports at Nativity Prep. Prior to Nativity Prep, Bob taught High School United States History at Dedham High School in Dedham, MA. He received his undergraduate degree from Providence College and his Massachusetts Teaching License in History Grades 5-12 at Bridgewater State University. Bob also likes to play golf and go to the beach in his free time. He has his two parents, an older sister, a younger sister, and two dogs named Gus and Millie!

Reading and Language Arts Lead Teacher (7th Grade), Student Services Coordinator

Vaniecia Skinner is the Lead Reading and Language Arts Teacher for the 7th grade and the Student Service Coordinator at Nativity Prep. Vaniecia’s overall essential question for the school year is what factors cause injustice. To answer this and many more questions students read The Outsiders, 12 Angry Men, The Giver, Maus I and II, March, and To Kill A Mockingbird. In addition, to overseeing the academic work of the 7th grade reading and language arts class, she serves as the Student Service Coordinator where she supports students academically. Vaniecia was a teaching fellow at Nativity for two years and loved Nativity so much that she decided to apply for the Lead 7th grade position. She received her undergraduate degree from Spelman College and a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston College. Her interest in constitutional law has led to 6th through 8th grade students participating in after school programs Mock Trial and Stand Up For your Rights.

Assistant Director of Advancement

Kevin D. Sullivan is the Assistant Director of Advancement at Nativity Prep. He assists with fundraising and community communications, manages the school’s social media accounts and runs the Chess Club and Chess Team. In addition to his role at Nativity Prep, Kevin works with the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as the Seminar Coordinator for the annual Jesuit Leadership Seminar. Prior to Nativity, Kevin held positions with Georgetown University’s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life and public relations firm Weber Shandwick. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, a native of New Jersey and a Red Sox convert.

Fredy Taveras Jr. is the 4th and 5th Grade Science and Religion teacher and a Teaching Fellow at Nativity Prep. In addition to his teaching, he oversees outdoor activities and the Computer Club. Before Nativity Prep, Fredy taught through the Head Start program at Education Alliance, New York City. He received his undergraduate degree from Fairfield University, and is a proud alumnus of the original Nativity Mission School on the Lower East Side of New York City.

Math Lead Teacher (7th & 8th Grade), Test Prep Teacher

Elise Tuggle is a Lead Teacher in the middle school at Nativity Prep where she teaches 7th Grade Pre-Algebra, 8th Grade Algebra, 7th and 8th grade Applied Math, and Test Prep. In the after-school program, Elise enjoys leading the Origami Club and helping coach track. Prior to her time at Nativity Boston, Elise taught math and Spanish for two years at Nativity Jesuit Academy in Milwaukee, WI. She earned her undergraduate degree from Fairfield University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston College’s Lynch School. Elise loves running, music, reading, travel, and trying new things – especially new foods!
